Tragedy struck the peaceful Essa community in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State when a fuel tanker exploded, claiming several lives and leaving many others badly injured.
According to eyewitnesses, the tanker fell while conveying fuel through the community. Moments after the crash, residents rushed to the scene to scoop the spilled product. Sadly, what began as an attempt to gather a few litres of fuel for survival turned into a heartbreaking disaster when the tanker suddenly exploded.
The blast engulfed the area in flames, leaving a trail of devastation. Several people lost their lives instantly, while many others sustained severe burns. Houses and nearby structures were also damaged by the fire.
Emergency response teams and local volunteers rushed in to rescue survivors and evacuate the wounded. Those injured were immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, where they are receiving treatment.
Witnesses described the scene as “horrific and unforgettable,” as families mourned loved ones lost to the inferno.
This tragic incident has once again drawn attention to the recurring danger of scooping fuel from fallen tankers—a deadly act that has claimed countless lives across Nigeria over the years. Despite repeated public warnings, desperation and poverty continue to drive many to take such risks.
Authorities have since visited the scene, offering support and promising to assist victims and their families. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has also been commended for its quick response and coordination of emergency efforts.
For the people of Essa, the scars of this tragedy will linger. It’s a grim reminder that no drop of fuel is worth a human life.
